Frequently Asked Questions

u

Is it safe for my pet to fly?

Travelling by air is as safe for pets as it is for people. Although your pet will not travel in the cabin with you, they will travel in a special cargo compartment that is climate controlled and pressurized to ensure the safest and comfortable travel.

u

Can my pet travel with adaptil collars/or flat collars?

It is advised by every airline that pets do not travel wearing a collar of any kind as they are deemed a choking hazard. They can, however, travel with them attached to their airline approved crate so that they can be refitted when they reach their destination. Regarding Adaptil/Feliway products, it is advised that the spray form is used instead.

u

Is it possible to send personal items with my pet?

Yes. Small items such as collars and leashes can be sent with your pet although it is not advised to send valuable items as they can become detached during travel and can be confiscated by the airline or customs. Comfort items such as a thin blanket or personal t-shirt, can go into the crate (at the airlines discretion).

u

Will my pet have food and water during the flight?

We will supply your pet with a drink of water at the airport before departure. Food is not provided during the flight as it is deemed a choking hazard. It is requested that you provide a small bag of dry food for your pet in the case that your pets flight is delayed or has a long period of stop over.

u

Where can I buy an airline approved crate?

We can supply you with an airline approved crate at an additional cost to your estimate provided by us upon request. It is a simple process of ensuring you have the correct sized crate for your pet. You provide us with your pet’s measurements and we will provide you with the best sized crate for your pet to travel in.

u

I’m unsure of how to measure my pet, what do I do?

Don’t stress! Why not call into us here in the office with your pet and we can help you with measurements and what crate is best suited for your pet. Not able to call into our office? We are available to be contacted by phone on +353 1 886 7700 where we can assist you over the phone.

u

I’m finding it difficult to get my pet to/from Dublin Airport, what can I do?

Why not ask us about our transport service, provided by Pets Direct, who can do a door to door service to help make your travel plans less stressful. We can provide you with an estimate for this door to door service and can arrange it for you accordingly.

u

Can I give my pet a sedative before travel?

No. Airlines have the right to refuse your pet if there is evidence of your pet being under sedation. It is advised that you prepare your pet for its journey by getting it accustomed to its travel crate if possible. It is also very important that you remain calm when around your pet as to not transfer any unnecessary stress to your pet.

u

My pet might need to urinate during travel, what happens then?

Unfortunately, little accidents sometimes do happen so the crates are lined with absorbable puppy training pads to help soak up any little accidents that do occur. Like humans, during flights our pets do experience a little dehydration which reduces the possibility of such accidents occurring. It’s also advised not to feed your pet the morning before travel as this may increase the chance of defecation or vomiting.

u

What happens if my pet goes missing while overseas?

Microchips are a fantastic thing to have to ensure your pet gets returned to you quickly, although there is one downfall. They only work if you register your pets microchip in every country that you visit with your pet. Have you heard of the ‘Global Pet Register’? This is an international pet register linked to a GPR collar tag worn by your pet. If your pet goes missing, the lost and found database can be accessed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Why not ask one of our team members for more information.

u

My pet needs to be cleared by a Veterinarian on import, does my pet have to leave the airport to have this done?

No. We are in fact the only agent who clears customs and do the vet exam at the cargo terminal on arrival of your pet. When you come off the same flight and by the time you have been through immigration and collected your baggage, we can have your pet cleared and ready to hand over to you at the cargo terminal. Why not ask our team for more information.

u

Can I send my pet with an airtag/tracking device?

Please note that AirTags or tracking devices are strictly prohibited to travel on either the travel kennel or pet during travel. Any AirTags or tracking device found will be removed and destroyed before the pet flies.
